Expert summary
The Republic of Iraq is an Arab country in Western Asia spreading across the Zagros mountain range, eastern Syria Desert, and the northern part of the Arabian Desert. Except for a very small coastline, Iraq is a landlocked country. The two major rivers are very famous and historically important, Tigris and Euphrates. The rich history of Iraq dates back to ancient Mesopotamia. The region between the Tigris and the Euphrates is taken as the cradle of civilization and the birthplace of writing. Iraq had the bad luck of having been the part of several empires and kingdoms throughout its troubled past. Since the combined attack in 2003 to oust Saddam Hussein, a multinational coalition of forces has occupied Iraq.
